In January 2020, an official announcement was made stating that Searchlight Pictures had partnered with director James Mangold for the biopic, and Chalamet was to star as the young Bob Dylan, just prior to the pandemic's impact on the industry.
As time passed and the entertainment scene gradually returned to its regular pace, Mangold informed Collider in April 2023 that filming was set to begin in August of that year. However, setbacks arose due to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, ultimately delaying production until March 2024.
