Streamlined Access to SearchGPT: OpenAI Enhances ChatGPT App for iPhone and iPad Users

The recent update for the ChatGPT application on iPhone and iPad brings an exciting new feature designed to enhance user experience. OpenAI has rolled out a shortcut that facilitates access to the SearchGPT functionality. This feature allows the AI chatbot to utilize information from the internet to understand and respond to user inquiries effectively. Currently, this capability is exclusive to paying subscribers of the service, and the new shortcut enables them to directly launch the app with the web search option activated.

The addition of the SearchGPT shortcut for compatible iPhone and iPad models was quietly implemented by OpenAI. There were no grand announcements or social media promotions to draw attention to this update; however, it was unveiled by various users and tech publications on Tuesday. Confirmation of the shortcut's presence also came from team members at Gadgets 360.

To set up this shortcut, users operating iOS and iPadOS will need to install Apple's Shortcuts application. After installation, they should find ChatGPT available within the app, provided the AI application is already on their devices. Within the app interface, users will discover a new Open SearchGPT shortcut option alongside existing choices for voice interactions, quick queries, new chats, and the ability to select distinct AI models such as GPT-4o and GPT-4o mini.

By choosing the SearchGPT option, users can seamlessly add this feature to their Home Screen. Additionally, those with devices that have been updated to the latest iOS 18.1 can activate SearchGPT through Siri, expanding the functionality of the virtual assistant.

OpenAI first introduced SearchGPT in October, presenting it as an improved method for conducting web searches. This feature leverages the company's proprietary search engine, enabling the chatbot to browse the internet efficiently. This means that ChatGPT can respond to questions beyond its built-in knowledge, grounding its replies in the information retrieved and providing links to the web pages utilized for verification.

Typically, Apple users can activate SearchGPT by tapping the world symbol positioned at the lower section of the text input area in the ChatGPT app. However, with the new shortcut, this web search feature will be automatically enabled upon opening the application, enhancing efficiency and removing the necessity for an additional tap.
