Shifting Sands of Hyrule: The Evolving Zelda Timeline and Future Possibilities

The Zelda series has long captivated its fanbase, particularly regarding the official timeline that tracks the franchise's evolution. Recent developments about the placement of Both Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom possess provided some clarity, especially after Nintendo introduced their unique positioning in the timeline. However, the inclusion of Echoes of Wisdom raises new questions. A recent update from Nintendo clarifies where this game belongs in the overarching narrative.

Echoes of Wisdom, which innovatively features Zelda as the lead character, falls within the ‘Hero is defeated’ branch of the timeline. This alternate path emerges from the pivotal Ocarina of Time, illustrating a scenario where Ganon prevails over Link. Following this, Echoes of Wisdom is set after the 2015 3DS title Tri Force Heroes and precedes the original Zelda game launched in 1986 for the NES.

Nintendo ominously signals the "Decline of Hyrule Kingdom" occurred after the events of Echoes of Wisdom and prior to the first Zelda title. This timeline concludes with the 1987 game The Adventure of Link, which serves as a direct sequel to the inaugural Zelda installment. Notably, the 'Hero is Triumphant' timeline branches into two distinct paths: one follows Link's childhood, while the other covers his adulthood. The childhood path is marked by titles like Majora’s Mask, and the adult timeline features the critically acclaimed Wind Waker.

So, that summarizes the current state of the timeline. But does this really matter? Interestingly, producer Eiji Aonuma has expressed that an obsession with Zelda's chronology may hinder the creative process of the development team. He suggests that exploring new narrative avenues is far more important than staying locked into a strict timeline.

Looking ahead, Nintendo is expected to unveil new Zelda titles, likely for their next console. The ongoing discussion about the timeline will undoubtedly resurface, heightening excitement for upcoming additions to the franchise.

In September of the previous year, Nintendo indicated it would not be developing downloadable content for Tears of the Kingdom and has shifted its focus to a completely new game. In an interview, Aonuma hinted at the possibility of revisiting the expansive universe of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, suggesting the potential for a third installment.

Aonuma remarked on the decision to create a sequel, pointing out the value in returning to Hyrule. "If a new reason arises, we might return to the same world again," he explained. Regardless of whether it emerges as a sequel or an original title, Aonuma assures that it will be a refreshing experience.
